Google Quietly Pushes Small December Hotfix Update for Pixel Phones

Google appears to have rolled out an unexpected system update for Pixel phones in December, surprising users who had already installed the main Android 16 QPR2 update and the December Pixel Drop. Unlike the usual monthly updates, this release is notably small and limited, suggesting it is intended to fix specific issues rather than introduce new features.

Small Update, Limited Rollout

The existence of this update first came to light through user reports on Reddit. Several owners of Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series devices reported receiving a new over-the-air update weeks after completing the standard December update. The download size is reportedly around 25MB, indicating a targeted hotfix rather than a full system patch.

So far, most reports have originated from the United States, with a few confirmations from users in the United Kingdom. However, the update does not appear to be rolling out widely, as many Pixel users have not yet seen it on their devices.

No Official Confirmation from Google

As of now, Google has not publicly acknowledged the update. There is no official changelog, and the company has not released factory images or OTA files for this build. Google’s Pixel firmware pages still list only the original December update, leaving some uncertainty about the scope and availability of this additional patch.

It also remains unclear whether older models, such as the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series, will receive this fix or if it is exclusive to newer Pixel phones.

Verizon Hints at What the Update Fixes

While Google has remained silent, Verizon has provided some insight into what this update addresses. According to the carrier, the update—identified as build BP4A.251205.006.E1—is available for Pixel 8 through Pixel 10 models and focuses on resolving several user-reported issues.

The fixes reportedly include:

  • Unusually fast battery drain
  • Intermittent touch responsiveness problems, particularly on the Pixel 10
  • Issues accessing locally cached content, such as offline maps or downloaded media, especially for users who upgraded directly from Android 14 or earlier versions to Android 16

These problems, while not affecting all users, can significantly impact daily usability, which explains why Google may have opted for a quiet, targeted rollout.

A Busy December for Pixel Phone Users

This extra update adds to what has already been a busy month for Pixel owners. December saw the release of the Pixel Drop, followed by the regular monthly security and bug fix update. While this latest OTA does not bring new features, it appears focused on improving stability and fixing critical bugs for a subset of users.

What Happens Next?

At this point, it is unclear whether Google plans to expand the update to more regions or devices. Until an official announcement is made, Pixel users experiencing battery, touch, or offline content issues may want to keep an eye on their system update settings.

For everyone else, the update serves as a reminder that Google sometimes deploys quiet fixes behind the scenes—especially when addressing issues that affect only a limited number of users.
